Research Roundup: Curcumin; Tomatoes & Prostate Cancer; High Fructose Corn Syrup & Arthritis

News and views from the nutrition front.

Curcumin Benefits Metabolic Syndrome

Curcumin supplements may help regulate insulin sensitivity and energy in people with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms characterized by obesity, hypertension, and ineffective glucose and insulin metabolism. Researchers randomly assigned 117 people with metabolic syndrome to take either curcumin supplements or a placebo. After eight weeks, leptin and adiponectin (energy and appetite hormones) ratio was improved, resulting in improvements in insulin resistance. Nutrition, April 2016

Tomatoes Protect Against Prostate Cancer Death

An inverse association between high tomato products and lycopene intake and death from prostate cancer was observed in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort (1992-2011). Data were analyzed from men diagnosed with nonmetastatic prostate cancer; those with high-risk cancer, who consistently reported lycopene intake at or above the average amount on the post-diagnosis survey, had lower incidence of death from prostate cancer compared to those reporting less than average intake. International Journal of Cancer, June 2016

HFCS Drinks Linked to Arthritis

Regular consumption of excess free fructose beverages (EFF), including high fructose corn syrup-sweetened soft drinks, fruit drinks, and apple juice, is associated with young adult arthritis. Research shows that EEF beverages, when consumed regularly, may travel beyond the intestines after absorption and cause inflammation in other tissues. A study of 1,209 adults aged 20-30 years found that those drinking EFF beverages more than five times a week were three times as likely to have arthritis as those who drank none or low amounts.
