Research Round-Up: Med Diet & Bone Loss; Oranges & Eye Health; Full-Fat Dairy

Mediterranean (Med) Diet Could Reduce Bone Loss

A Med-style diet may help reduce bone loss in people with osteoporosis, researchers say. More than 1,100 participants, age 65 to 79, were randomly divided into two groups: one followed a Med diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, whole grains, and olive oil, and the other did not. Bone density was measured at the start and after 12 months. Those (with normal bone density) on the Med diet saw no change, but those with osteoporosis had increased bone density in the thigh bone, a key area of importance related to hip fracture. Those not following the Med diet experienced the usual age-related decrease in bone density.

Oranges May Benefit Eye Health

An orange a day may reduce risk of age related macular degeneration, according to researchers. More than 2,000 Australians over age 50 were followed by researchers for 15 years. Those who ate at least one serving of oranges daily had more than a 60% reduced risk of developing macular degeneration over the 15-year period. It was also noted that even one orange a week provided significant benefits, likely due to flavonoids in oranges which seem to protect against the disease.

Full-Fat Dairy Gleans Healthier Reputation

Full-fat dairy foods, like milk, cheese, and yogurt, may not increase risk of heart disease or death and may help protect against severe stroke, researchers say. Plasma levels of three fatty acids found in dairy was measured in nearly 3,000 study participants age 65 and older at study onset, six and 13 years later. None of the fatty acids were significantly associated with total mortality, and one was linked to lower cardiovascular disease deaths.
