Fermented Foods Rise to the Top of Food Trends

If you’ve been noticing more fermented foods on supermarket shelves, you’re on to something. They are at the top of the superfoods list for 2018, according to a Pollock Communications and Today’s Dietitian Survey of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs). RDNs predict that fermented foods, including yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, tempeh, kombucha, kimchi, and miso, will be one of the most popular food categories, as consumers become more interested in the benefits of probiotics (friendly bacteria) on gut and immune health. Other popular superfoods include avocado, seeds, and nuts (see Top 10 Superfoods).

In addition, RDNs report that consumers are moving towards “natural, less processed foods,” which include a focus on “simple ingredients” and “plants.” RDNs list their best diet advice as: make small changes, focus on the overall eating pattern, limit highly processed foods, increase fiber intake, keep a food journal, and choose non-caloric beverages, such as unsweetened tea or coffee.
