Cataract Surgery Enhances Quality of Life, and May Even Extend It

Older women who undergo cataract surgery have a lower risk of death from any cause or from certain specific causes.

A seminal study of 74,044 women with cataracts, of whom 41,735 had cataract surgery, found that the surgery was associated with a 60 percent reduced risk of death from all causes, and a 37 to 69 percent reduced risk of death due to pulmonary, infectious, neurologic and vascular diseases, cancer, and accidents.
